How to Convert Kindle Books (AZW3, MOBI) to EPUB
Amazon retired the MOBI format in 2022 and now delivers books as AZW3 (also called KF8). The problem: neither format opens on a Kobo, in Apple Books, or in most reading apps. The universal standard everyone else uses is EPUB.
MOBI, AZW3, EPUB: what's the difference?
- MOBI — Amazon's legacy format, based on the old Mobipocket standard. Limited layout features, no embedded fonts.
- AZW3 (KF8) — Amazon's modern format since 2011. Better typography and CSS support, but still locked to the Kindle ecosystem.
- EPUB — The open standard maintained by the W3C. Works on Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Tolino, PocketBook, and virtually every reading app except the Kindle app itself.
Convert MOBI or AZW3 to EPUB in three steps

A note on DRM
This works for DRM-free files only: personal documents, books from DRM-free stores, self-published works, or files where the publisher allows format shifting. If a book is DRM-protected, the conversion will fail. Removing DRM may be illegal in your country, and ConvertFly does not do it.
Going the other way
